Get Ready for Kindergarten Field Trip: Lois Ehlert

Playing in the kitchen. I've started including some
open playtime for kindergarteners in my field trips.
  • Program goals
    • Introduce pre-kindergarteners to the library
    • Encourage kids to see the library as a fun place
  • Butterflies (Terri & Kylee) (Teen Area)
    • Waiting for wings (extra story - Ten little caterpillars)
    • Emerging butterflies from Teaching with favorite Lois Ehlert books
    • Die-cut butterflies, markers, cut-down paper towel tubes, tape
    • Pompom caterpillars, glue dots
  • Rainbow (Pattie & Colin) (Children's Garden)
    • Planting a rainbow (extra story - Pie in the sky)
    • Chalk (draw flowers on the sidewalk squares)
    • Additional activities
      • Water play
      • Bubbles
  • Matching magnets (Jennifer) (Storyroom)
    • Oodles of animals; Lots of spots (extra story - Color Zoo)
    • Magnets (each kid gets 2 each of circles, squares, and strips)
    • Shaped stickers
    • Kids match up the stickers and magnets (they have to check on the magnetic chalkboard to put their stickers on the right side!) then match and make different shapes/animals
    • Open playtime (including Lois Ehlert magnet games on blackboard)

    Mad Scientists Club: What floats, what flies

    Program Goals Encourage kids to think about how and why things float and fly Encourage creative thinking and problem solving Attendance: 35 Project: Making Boats Styrofoam plates and bowls Ribbon, straws Paper, foil, wax paper, tape, markers Project: Making paper airplanes Paper Rulers, pencils, scissors Tape, Foil, wax paper, rubber bands, popsicle sticks Ladder and masking tape for the floor Paper airplane books Evaluation 7-21-16 Attendance: 31 Notes: I did not have styrofoam or straws and decided to just use what we had in the cupboard. It was a super hot day and I did not expect a ton of people. 6-25-15 Attendance:  45 Notes : I threw a bunch of the plastic balls in the pools and that was fun. The styrofoam plates are not as exciting, because they're guaranteed to float, but we weren't feeling super creative today anyways. 10-16-14 (combined with force and motion) Attendance:  18 Notes:  I could use a more sturdy ladder. 2014 Attendance:  40 Notes for the future...

    Program Goals Learn about animal adaptions and the science behind them Attendance: 25 Project: Gliding Supplies Paper (misc. and tissue paper) Pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks Scissors, tape, staples Ladder Learn about gliding animals by creating your own and launching it from the ladder Project: Feathers Supplies feathers popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners paper scissors, tape, staples markers Create and explore with feathers. (I could add oil and dip them in water, but I didn't want to.)
