Field Trip: Explore Elkhorn

  • Program Goals 
    • Introduce kids to the library, from the past to the present 
Tour
  • Start upstairs, in the oldest part of the library.
    • Mary Bray - first librarian
    • Library is over 100 years old
    • Look at the ceiling of the genealogy room
    • Look at the microfilm machine
    • Stop by the cabinet of old books and talk about how the things the library has changes (used to just have old books, now we have computers, toys, etc.)
  • Look at the first addition (upstairs)
    • Find the spots where the outer wall become the inner wall (bricks on ramp) and look at the inner windows
  • Visit basement (optional)
    • Used to be children’s area
    • Floods (this is very exciting)
    • Go out steps through garden
  • Visit the newest part of the building
    • Talk about how the children’s area has changed over the years
    • Talk about the different kinds of materials we have now
    • Visit tech services and talk about how the library catalogs and processes materials.
Past, Present, and Future library books
  • 9x18 sheets of construction paper folded in half
  • On the front “The Library Today”, inside “The Library Tomorrow”, on the back “The Library Yesterday”
  • Kids write or draw about what they’ve seen and imagine for the library
If there’s still time, or while some kids finish their project, explore the children’s area and play.

    Mad Scientists Club: What floats, what flies

    Program Goals Encourage kids to think about how and why things float and fly Encourage creative thinking and problem solving Attendance: 35 Project: Making Boats Styrofoam plates and bowls Ribbon, straws Paper, foil, wax paper, tape, markers Project: Making paper airplanes Paper Rulers, pencils, scissors Tape, Foil, wax paper, rubber bands, popsicle sticks Ladder and masking tape for the floor Paper airplane books Evaluation 7-21-16 Attendance: 31 Notes: I did not have styrofoam or straws and decided to just use what we had in the cupboard. It was a super hot day and I did not expect a ton of people. 6-25-15 Attendance:  45 Notes : I threw a bunch of the plastic balls in the pools and that was fun.     Program Goals Learn about animal adaptions and the science behind them Attendance: 25 Project: Gliding Supplies Paper (misc. and tissue paper) Pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks Scissors, tape, staples Ladder Learn about gliding animals by creating your own and launching it from the ladder Project: Feathers Supplies feathers popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners paper scissors, tape, staples markers Create and explore with feathers. (I could add oil and dip them in water, but I didn't want to.)
